Recipient variables

Learn how to personalize your WhatsApp messages using recipient variables. Complete guide on setting up, managing, and using variables for better message personalization.

Recipient variables

Variables are a powerful way to personalize your WhatsApp messages for each recipient. Think of variables as placeholders in your messages that get automatically filled with specific information for each person.

What are variables?

Variables are like personalized labels that you can attach to each recipient. They store information about that person (like their name, company, or any other details) and allow you to use that information in your messages.

Example transformation:

Instead of sending a generic message:

"Hello! Thanks for your interest in our product."

You can send a personalized message:

"Hello John! Thanks for your interest in our marketing services for ABC Company."

Why use variables?

Variables make your messages feel more personal and professional:

  • Higher engagement: People are more likely to respond to personalized messages
  • Professional appearance: Shows you know who you're talking to
  • Time-saving: Set up once, use in all messages automatically
  • Better relationships: Creates a more personal connection with your contacts

How to set up variables

Method 1: Adding variables manually

When adding a recipient manually:

  1. Go to your flow's recipients page
  2. Click "Add Recipient"
  3. Enter the phone number
  4. In the Variables section, add key-value pairs:
    • Key: The variable name (like "name", "company", "product")
    • Value: The specific information for this person (like "John", "ABC Corp", "Premium Plan")

Example:

  • Key: name → Value: John Smith
  • Key: company → Value: ABC Corporation
  • Key: interest → Value: Premium Plan

Method 2: Importing from CSV

When importing recipients from a CSV file:

  1. Prepare your CSV file with columns for phone numbers and any additional information
  2. Click "Import CSV" on the recipients page
  3. Upload your CSV file
  4. Map the columns:
    • Select which column contains phone numbers
    • Choose which other columns you want to use as variables
  5. Import your recipients
